What testing one vial tells you about a batch

A result describes the sample tested. Extending it to a batch requires a sampling plan and evidence about how the units were selected.

A batch number is a connection, not a measurement

A shared batch identifier helps connect records. It does not show that every unit has the same content, purity or handling history. Keep the supplier lot and the laboratory sample identifier visible when presenting results.

The wording “one sealed vial received” describes the material submitted. It does not mean the laboratory inspected the rest of the batch or selected the vial independently. Those are separate facts.

Decide what the sampling should establish

Testing a single selected vial may answer a question about that vial. Investigating consistency across a lot asks a broader question and needs a plan for selecting and identifying multiple units.

There is no universal sample count that this article can assign to every batch. The objective, batch size, available information and decision criteria need to be agreed with the laboratory or sampling specialist. Explain whether you are investigating identity, variation in fill, or another property.

Keep individual results distinguishable

Record which units were submitted and how they were chosen. Where units are tested individually, give each a separate identifier. Where material is pooled, make that explicit because a combined result does not reveal the value for each original vial.

A range of individual findings and a pooled average convey different information. Ask for the reporting format that matches the sampling question before samples are prepared.

Share the scope with the result

When linking a public COA, identify the tested sample, the lot information supplied, and any limits on broader conclusions. Avoid turning an individual sample result into a blanket statement about all stock.

A useful publication says what was tested, who selected it if known, what was measured and what remains untested. That gives readers enough context to judge whether the evidence answers their own question.
